There were two big matches of UEFA
Champions League round of sixteen second leg lastnight. The challenge of UEFA
Champions League became over for the English side Arsenal & Russian side Zenit
Saint Petersburg this year. In their
home match at Emirates stadium, London the English side Arsenal took on the
Italian giant AC Milan & in another match at Estádio do Sport stadium, Lisbon the Portugese side Benfica
took the Russian league Champion Zenit Saint Petersburg.
The
Azzuri side became through to the quarter final of the tournament in 4-3
aggregate where they will take on the Portugese side Benfica. According to the
first leg result experts thought that the match between Arsenal & AC Milan
is just a formality because the Gunners were 0-4 down according to the first
leg & its very difficult to overturn from there, but the Gunners almost
made the impossible possible in front their homecrowd. The hosts looked very
determined from the beginning, once it looked like the history of 2005
Champions League Final is going to repeat with the Italian side, where they
took a decent margin of 3-0 in first half against Liverpool & lost the
match finally in a tie-breaker. From the beginning the hosts took the entire
control of the midfield,Marco Van Bommel was leading in the midfield & his
countrymen Robin Van Persie was leading
in the upfront, the hosts minimized the 3 goal deficit out of 4 in the very
first half of the game by taking advantage of the complete off-color form of
the visitors. The hosts occupied four corners within twenty minutes of the
first half. In just 7th minute of the game Koscienly gave the lead
to the hosts, in 26th minute of the game Rosicky doubled the lead
with the help of a poor clearance by Milan defenders, Van Persie scored from
the spot just 2 minutes to spare in the first half & put a 3-0 lead in the
first half. After the restart of the game Milan boss Massimiliani Allegri organized his defence a lot, although Van Persie wasted a golden
opportunity in the 58th minute, or else the match could be gone into
tie-breaker.
Meanwhile in another match in Lisbon
the homeside Benfica won in a 2-0 margin against Zenit Saint Petersburg & through to the quarter final in a 4-3
aggregate. In their away match they hosts conceded a 2-3 defeat against the Russian
side. The hosts scored both the goals in the injury time of the both half. Maxi
Pereira & Nelson Oliviera scored for the hosts, in quarter final they have
to face AC Milan now.
There are two big matches of UEFA
Champions League round of sixteen second leg tonight also, in the first match of the return leg the Spanish giant Barcellona
will play their home match against the German side Bayern Leverkusen at Nou
Camp, holding a 3-1 lead from the first leg, in that match the hosts are going
to miss the Chilie international Alex Sanchez who scored twice in the first
leg. In another match at GSP Stadium, Nicosia in Cyprus the Cyprus side Apoel will
take on the French side Lyon, the hosts are trailing in 0-1 deficit according
to first leg.
Good news for sub-continent,
FIFA president Sepp Blater told in a press meet that any two countries might bid
for the 2030 World Cup, if they can make their infrastructures ready then they
can get the responsibility of hosting that mega-event even, he quoted another
thing that FIFA is ready to help the teams of sub-continent for developing
football in that part of Asia.
